ST. BATHANS.

(From Our Own Correspondent!)

i • - ts.-" .June 30, 1890. ■ attehtibn c of the County Council is "directed to the dange. ous state of O'Reilly's new roa.l, at the creek.crossiug. To avoid'an accident'that would'ih all probability be fatal,-it would-be wise for?the Council to have the crossing fenced on both sides for at least two chains.

"■ Medical.—At >a meeting of the Central Otago Hospital Board held at Clyde a fpw weeks ago, a numerously sigued : petition from St. Bathaus and surrounding district was presented by W. Burnett, Esq:, repre sentative,-; praying that an annual grant-be allocated; to the district to enable its inhabitants"to secure a resident doctor: The petition was received favorably, and I learn: that a grant, of ■. £IOO per annum has since Befeii c'oriceiletriiy the Board. To this grant it is anticipated £l5O cau be added annually by local;. subscription. It is confidently hopid, therefore, that ere long .the'loeality will be supplied with what has hitherto beßn to many a much-felt want. With a guarantee, of £250 a-year, besides a fairly' populous 'district for practice, it may be reasonably assumed that the services of a' well-qualified gentleman will lie readily obtainable. The district includes' Beet's, Cambrians, Blackstoue Hill and St. Barhans.' The laiter is the most central.

: Stock-—'.'Tattoo,?' a well-bred horse widely known in this and other districts, died at Becks about a fortnight ago. It was owned by Mr. Thomas• Keenan, -who purchased it when it was only a few months old. This notice may be observed by those whd, unaware of the death of.the animal, have since been negotiating with Mi-. Keenan as to the sale of -it - ■ :'

• Minisg.-—There is nothing -of interest under this" heading. King Frost has given the miners a holiday, and all mining lias suddenly come to a full stop. "Curling" has taken its place, and it forms the chief pastime. • ;, ;

Cukhsg.V-" Keen curlers'" Jseem to forget dull times, and go in right heartily for enjoyment. An unusually large nnmber of medals, trophies, etc., are under competition this season, and at present excellent ice is available. Rinks are now doing battle for eight medals presented by the M essrs. Thnrlow, and some exciting finishes are certain. I may state-that our club are looking forward with pleasure to an agreeable meeting of foreign rinks on the Hawkdun ice at no distant date.
