JOTTINGS FROM BLACKS.
(BY OUR CORRESPONDENT.)
At last we are likely to have a mining boom here. In the first place, Green's Beef and Seam Workings Company will be in full swing shortly. The mine manager has been appointed and is on the ground, aud the company have let a contract to clean ont the Lauder race.
Messrs. Dennis Fogarty and Bryan Flannery, hailing from Tinkers, have applied for a claim of 60 acres, commencing behind the township of Ophir, and extending to the preemptive right. It surrounds Green's reef claim. They have also applied for 15 heads of water, to be brought in from the Manuherikia Eiver at a point between the Poolburn and the "White Horse crossing. The race will bo flumed over the Poolburn and brought in to command the crown of the hills behind the preemptive right and the township. The party have also applied for 15 heads of water from the Manuherikia River, to take its rise about two miles above Ophir, to be used as flushing water. The idea is a good one and will certainly pay for the outlay, provided the water is brought in high enough. There is plenty good sluicing ground, with plenty fall until it reaches the flit, where the flushing water will come in to assist in carrying away the debris. I hear a large claim has been applied for at the lower gorge, and extending up behind the township on the flat, so that everything in the way of mining is looking brisk here.
Last court-day Mr J. Ewing madeapplicatioa to lift eight heads of water from Thomson's Creek, Tinkers. He made a similar application last January, when his application was refused, on the ground that there was no water in the creek to grants and that former wardens had agreed to give no more rights from this gorge. Mr Ewing, however, was more fortunate with his second application, the warden granting him six heads. In doiDg so he stated that any arrangement by previous wardens would not affect him, but he would only grant sis heads. The miners are very sore over this grant, sayiug it will entail endless disputes and litigation, as the new right heads above the older races.
