THE MAIDEN PLATE AT ST BATHANS.

\ fTo tJieEditoir of the MOUNT IDA CHRONICLE.) '\^J^H 1 -In your report of the St Bathans BSSsTMeetiDg, published on December 31st, the following occurs : —" Two protests were entered during the meeting by Messra

Monk and M'Lean, and Mr Inder. against the rider of Jacky Jacky in the Maii--n. Neither were supported by evidence." As I seldom trouble the papers with letters, 1 at first determined to let the thins drop, but as it has been discussed much more freely than I have expected I am bound, even at this late hour, to clear myself. From this it would be inferrerl that I entered a protest which I was not able to sustain. Now, as a matter of fact, I was never asked to sustain it. It was to be heard at S p.m. that evening, but the stewards did not, to my knowledge, assemble at that hour. At about 12 o'clock I was requested by one of the stewards to go to the room and receive back my protest deposit, which I did. I was never asked for evidence in support of my protest. So the inference conveyed in your report that I could noc support it is unwarranted, and misleading. 1 am perfectly confident that I could have supported the protest, and, I may say that I delayed my departure, and that of my boy, till the following morning, in order to do so. The fact of my pi otest not being sustained is owing, I therefore contend, not to my inability to sustain it, but to the stewards not giving me an opportunity to do so.—l am &c.. Samuel IhderBlackstone Hill, February 13.
