Lake Batburst and the Tarrago Lakes are also->in this district. " The formation of freshwater lakes in Australia," says \a comparatively -recent English writer, "presents some curiousphenomena. Lake George, which is generally thought to be the largest lake on the Continent, was not in existence twenty-four years ago. It is-situated'at about' 150 miles from Sydney, at a height of 2000 feet above the ■sea-level, and is twenty-three miles long, seven miles wide, and from twenty-fice to thirty feet deep. . The Rev. R. Abbay attributes the recent and rapid formatiori of this lake-to the killing of the trees which until lately overspread nearly the whole; basin in which it stands."
