MATA'S DISQUALIFICATION.
Referring to Mata's running in the j Y.li.C. Handicap, the 'Argus' of the Sth says::—" Ndne horsef started for'the W.. RG.l'Handicap, for -which JSapper Tandy was first favourite for a while, biit Mata was so presistently backed that he started at sto 2 against him. The backers ] of Mata evidently knew what they were doing, as the horse won comfortably in the fastest time on record. The stewards were not satisfied with the way Mata had been run, and .called on Mr Yallance to explain the'hopse'-s in the Royalpark Stakes on iPhurajky, where toeim?; Ashed absolutely last." In its iseae of; tihe following day, the same journal says:—"The suspicious ranning of the j horse Mata during the. "V.It.C. Spring I Meeting has met with prompt treatment' at the hands of the stewards. The fol-i lowing notice was posted at the office of ' the Club yesterday-— :< The stewards having -considered the:running of the horse Mata -.in the Hoy a! Park Stakes, on the 4th Jioyember, .1880, .have decided that, the jockey ißay'shaltbe .disqualified from riding or training any hors<>; and that the horse Mala shall-'be disqualified from running u.pou it)he iEUeuHßgtan racecourse.'" ■ The 'Age' says: —" The investigation j ibeld by the' Committee into Mata's run- ! raing for the to nothing, but su-spiieioDS are abroad 'that he did not do his best .possible for the Cup, and was suffering from the .metallic influence of, the 'betting ring. The decision .of -the : stewards was made known yesterday morning." A Reuter's telegram which appeaTS'this ! mcrning states that the Wagga Turf I Club have endorsed the disqualification. I "Bracon," writing in the ' Leader ' on' theiGupirace,.says,:—" Of all the defeats*, the most oinaucoun'trible was'that of Mata, who .nan well to the -straight, <rc!here be j dnqpped vbaek, .in amongst 'the'rudk. ft may sbe s«hat this horse 'has' been asked to do too much on the training ground. Be this as it/may, the. position 'he the race wAs«very ' unsatisfactory, after aU the iblow which '■ lias bpen indulged in about this New Zealander."
