HYDE.
(Prom a correspondent.) Spring has now set in in earnest, and our larnv>M are all busily employed in scattering the precious seed. Tliera will be a good deal of laud, bath maiden and fallow, broken up ?n this district before the season is done. We have now, besides a goodly number of swing ploughs, two double furrows at work here.
A Mutual Improvement Society was formed here some few weeks back, and now numbers fourteen or fifteen members. The following officers have been chosen—Mr. James Bamsay, President; Mr. John Duff, Vice-President; and Mr. T. iL Ritchey, Hon. Secretary and Treasurer Mr H. W. Robinson, fi.iT-, has most kindly consented to deliver a lecture on the 25th inst., the proceeds to be given to the funds of the Society. I may say much credit is due to Mr. Ritchey for hi* efforts m connection with this Institution and also for the evident interest he takes in anything conducive to the good of the youth of this place. As a teacher he is labonns under great disadvantages, with some fifty or more children on"the roll. The old building used as a schoolroom can scarcely accommodate forty, and even then it was not built by the Education Boara. It is an old rickety, tumbledown place, erected in the early digging days of Hyde to be u=;ed as a church, and rented bj the School Committee for ten years. The lease expires some time during the present year, and I reaily think the Church Trustees would confer an inestimable boon on the district by refusing the further use of it as a school-room Were they to do so, steps would then have to be takeD to procure suitable accommodation.
The hot winds we have been latelv experiencing are causing the snow to" melt on the mountains, and the consequence is that laieri will soon be uncrossabie. An- w other year gone, and no bridge. People may well say, " will we ever get it ?" The Tax-gatherers have again been round, making us "shell out." It is to be hoped that the funds collected by them will be judiciously expended.
