PETITION TO THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE.
In reference to the imprisonment of Messrs J. Kealv and G. Hodgins, for ducking the Chinaman who js at present on bail to take his trial at the District.Court ou Monday 23rd, the following petition,'signed by the Mayor) Town Councillors, audj 104 others, was on iu-iday telegraphed to the Minister of Justice. :Vlr. deLautour, M.U.U. wa also telegraphed to to do ali in his power in the matter -. That a L.k uamau named Ah Sm stands committed for trial at tlie District Court on ilonday. 23rd inst for an aggravated assault on one David G. Mowat i wo Europeans, Joseph Kealy and Samuel Hodgins who witnessed the assault, and by their interference probably prevented Howat being"killed, and who arc bound over as the trial, in the heat of the moment seizad aud ducked in the assaiiltineCuinaman in a small shadow pool of water r.djacent The Chinaman was; not in any way injured. Both are highly respectable men, and we trust that, looking at the extenuating circumstances of the wise, von wii, be good enough to order their immediate release. And your petitioners will ever huniblv pri>y On Saturday, the Minister of" Justice telegraphed -instructions for the men to be liberated, which was accordingly done.
