MEMORIAL.
Tho following is a copy of a memorial drawn up by the St. Bathans Progress Committeo,. which has been extensively signed in the district, and forwarded to Mr. de Lautour, M.P.C., for presentation :
St. Bathans, April 30, 1875. To his Honor James Macandrew, Esq., Superintendent of the Province of Otago, in the Colony of New Zealand, The memorial of the undersigned residents of St. Bathans, Welshman's Gully and. Blackstone Hill, Humbly sheweth: 1. That- your memorialists have occasion to travel the road " St. Bathans to Hill's Creek " and back very frequently, and in doing so must cross the river Manjuherikia. 2. That, for want of horses or other conveyance, many of your memorialists are compelled to ford the river on foot, thereby placing themselves in great peril when the river happens to be high. 3. That, in attempting the crossing, a life was lost some time ago, and that, in order to guard/against such a calamity in
the future, it is necessary to erect a footbridge at the said crossing. 4. That the cost of such bridge would be very trifling, compared with returns of revenue represented by your memorialists.
5 Your memorialists hope that your Honor will be pleased to send the District Engineer to report on the same, and have a sum placed on the Estimates for its speedy erection. And your memorialists will ever pray, &c.
