ANNUAL BCHOOL EXAMINATION

The annual examination of the Hyde school took place on Wednesday, Decem'iler 23rd, before a large assemblage of parents, and others interested in the school. The room presented quite a gay appearance, being tastefully decorated with flowers and evergreens, with- the motto, "Knowledge is Power" artistically worked on .one end of the building. The Committee being disappointed through the unavoidable, absence- of Messrs. Main and M'KeDzie—were fortunate "in securing the services of Mr. Neil), of Macraes school, and Mr. Lave'rty, of Hyde, who acted as judges—performing the duties in a most satisfactory manner. The examination was conducted by Mr. our teacher—who subjected the ch'ildren to a rigid questioning, extending »ver several hours.

Special Prize, Dux of School in grammar, geography, arithmetic —. Thomas Ramsay. Mr. J. Neill presented the prizes to the successful children, which task he per-, formed admirably, complimenting each one as he handed the book. At the conelusion he spoke at some length, expressing his pleasure at being present. He complimented the readier on the proficiency of his school, and warned the pnze-takers against allowing the fact of receiving prizes making them proud, and causing them to be indolent during the coming year, but expressing a hope that they would strive to be all the more earnest and diligent, and strive,to appear in the same honorable position at the next examination.

Mr. Laverty also spoke at some length, and in high terms on the creditable manner m which the scholars, had acquitted themselves ; also on the order and good behaviour of the children. Several other gentlemen and members ot the bchool Committee bore testimony to the marked improvement, in all the branches, during the past twelve months; after which,

' ( Mr. Odell briefly replied, thanking the _ judges for the trouble they had taken, and ; also all present for having honored the ■ '"achool with their presence that day. At the conclusion of the examination, the children and friends adjourned to a neighboring paddock, where they were supplied with cakes, lollies, &c, and where running and other sports were indulged in until dark, when the proceedings terminated with three cheers each for the teacher, the School Committee, arid the Misses Annett and Prendergast, who were so kind as to canvass the district for subscriptions towardrprizesT'and' who succeeded in raising the large sum of £9 lis. for that object.; fc ,* ,* HYDE ANNtUL RACES. The above meeting took place on New ' Year s Day en the Hyde course. The weather was all that could be dwired, and the course had

Several.of-the races were well contested, more especially t'hu trotting race, in which the celebrated Ranger exhibited some wonderful trotting. Messrs. Consolation Handicap.—For all beaten horses during the meeting. Mr. E. O'Connell's Nelly, 1. . . ' The annual race ball was. held in the evening at the Commercial Hotel, when a large number attended, and spent a most enjoyable evening. Dancing was fully indulged in until an early hour. Mr. -J. O'Brien acted as M.C.,—music being discoursed by Mr. Booth, of Hamilton.
