The Melbourne correspondent; of the 'Daily Times' says : —" There are hopes of an important experiment being shortly made to test the process invented by Mr. James Harrison of. preserving, meat by freezing. It is contemplated to send an experimental shipment of 22 tons to England frozen in this way, the estimated expense being £2500, and appeal is made to the pastoral class for the amount required to cover this outlay. The gain that would accrue to the squatters from such an outlet for their stock it is impossible to over estimate. The great drawback on the consumption of Australian preserved meats in England is the English prejudice against meat in tins, and in favour of cooked meat, and if this difficulty is to be surmounted at all, it must be, it would seem, by some method akin to that of Mr. Harrison. The worst of it is, the sqtiatters, although a disgustingly wealthy class, are narrow-minded, unenterprising, and very close handed, and it is doubtful how far they will support this movement, important as it is to their future interests. Mr. Harrison obtained a gold medal from the Exhibition Commissioners for his invention. He is the founder of the highly-successful Melbourne Ico Company, and is an able journalist, and a man of practical acquaintance with scientific pursuits."
