MR. MERVYN, M.H.R.

Sir,—"When angels drop their wings mortals well may gaze, but it is not given to all men to see the sight. Allow me, " spiritually" endued, to point out a < blissful scene —a gracious descent—a very Archangel in breeches and boots. Mr. Mervyn is going to bestow a Sludge Channel upon his grateful constituency ! 'Tis true the late Government had already agreed to construct such a work at once. That would not suit Mr. Mervyn, not having the true angelic ring about it, so he helps to turn them out. A gift to be appreciated must be a personal one—must come through Mr. Mervyn, Minister of Mines. What, a glorious sight! " How beautiful, indeed, upon the mountains are the feet of him who giveth Sludge Channels!" As a last effort, Mr. Macandrew endeavored to get a sum of money allotted to the Provincial Government for this work and others. This, defeated by a small majority, numbered among its opponents Mr. Mervyn. Have we not had enough of Mr. Mervyn ? It would surely be better to have no member at all than that, through our member, Mount Ida should become a byeword and a reproach.—l am, &c., ; Alpha.
