f / _ • Sib, —Though I admit " identity of interest, integrity; of a £_ moderate amount education " to be I some.of the qualifications, which a reI preservative should possess, still I am ft tof opinion that there are other qualifiK cations of equal, if not greater, imporB tanee. Among these I would include B honesty and independence. When I say ■ honesty, I mean that.a represenmtiVe B should be in such a^pp^tionwith-jije- ■ gard to monetary affairs as to be free I from any temptation which unscrupulous Governments are- always u; fouiid ready to offer for |iartie : s in the House are tolerably evenly balanced. , In l!am quite, willing to concede thafca b& poor, and at the samertiihe honest !an& | independent. But in politics, when a I poor man,, however .able, enters the !. arena, he is compelled to pacrifeehis former means,of livelihood for his iiew calling, and thus lay himself open to the charge of making his new calling his means of livelihood. I am of opinion, sir, that a man so. placed cannot: be, in the strict sense of the word, ppI litically independent, and that not politically independent' he cannot be ( ..jiolitically honest, nor be, therefore, a fit person to represent a constituency of independent voters. ■-..., , You state in your leader in last week's issue you'will not insult the Mount Ida constituency by assum- ! ing that within the large area comprised within the electoral limits of the district " many duly qualified gentlemen" | tnay not be.found. Xain' glad to hear L that so large a number of persons posE sessing the qualifications of," identity I of interest, integrity ;of; purpose, and a I moderate amount of education " are to. I be met with in the district of Mount I Ida. I think;;however, sir] tK^t'y&u 1 1 ghould.publis]i in order man opinion asntp whetherjtoii not' these
men or whether they possess the other qualifications "to which-I have honesty and independence.--! am,.Ac,
