MOUNT IDA DISTRICT SCHOOL EXAMINATION.

The Mount Ida School was examined yesterday by Mr. Hislop, Inspector of Schools, in presence of the School Committee and several parents. The proceedings occupied fully three hours. The English classes first passed under review; the attainments of each child being carefully noted. The reading of the higher classes was, upon the whole, very satisfactory. Several of the pupils of the first class read both prose and poetry with taste and feeling. In grammar the knowledge displayed was somewhat elementary. In geography the Inspector selected the map of Europe, and the pupils answered very correctly a large number of questions put by the master and the Inspector. The arithmetic classes were carefully examined from the primary rules to the most advanced, and in a majority of cases the pupils acquitted themselves well. The copy books, which were all submitted to the inspection of Mr. Hislop, were upon the whole neatly kept, and carefully written. In some cases the handwriting was very creditable. Mr. Hislop advised the children not to throw away their copy books when written, but to preserve them carefully for the purpose of comparison on a future occasion. The children, during the whole of the examination, conducted themselves with the greatest propriety, and we believe the Inspector has spoken of their behaviour in complimentary terms. We understand Mr. Hislop held | a meeting with the School Committee j. and Mr. Petchell after the close of the examination, when the matters at issue between the Committee and the schoolmaster were fully gone into.
