PHYSICAL WELFARE AND RECREATION.
INSTRUCTORS VISIT FOXTON
On Wednesday evening an enthusiastic group of Foxtoniaus assembled in the Town Hall supperroom to meet Miss Noeline Thomson and Mr Stewart McNicol, area instructors from the Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington. The visitors were introduced by Mr J. Macdonald, President of the Pox Lon Physical Welfare and Recreation Committee, after which Miss Thomson explained the aim of the Department, which was to increase the number of participants in leisure time activities, with" special reference to “keep fit” classes. The speaker stressed the fact that to make sure of being physically fit, was the best way to prepare for any emergency.
Miss Thomson then formed those present into a squad and proceeded to put them through a typical “keep fit” lesson, modelled on the lines of the work which has been so successful in England. This was followed by informahgames and dancing, which were thoroughly appreciated 1 by all. The hope was expressed that a permanent class would be formed in Foxton at an early date. Miss Thomson promised to do what she could to expedite matters in this connection and also to coach the local girls in “soft ball,” which is proving so popular as a summer game in Canada, Australia and parts of New Zealand. Although “soft ball” is a comparatively new game, it is none the less, thrilling and is sure to appeal to the young people of this district. Details of this practice game will be advertised shortly and all girls interested are invited to join, the class.
A development of Miss Thomson’s recent visit.to Levin has been the formation of. a cycling club for girls. The club will undertake short rides to interesting places within easy reach. Miss Thomson hopes to interest local girls in a similar project.
’ COMMITTEE MEETING. A committee meeting* of the Foxton Physical Welfare and Recreation Committee was held last evening, and was presided over by Mr Macdonald (President). A welcome was extended to Mr McNicol and Miss Thomson. A letter was read from the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. Parry) expressing pleasure at the keen interest by the committee in physical welfare. The secretary (Mi* W. Hale) explained that the letter was the result of a series of suggestions and queries which were submitted to the Minister by the committee. Mr McNicol discussed the committee’s letter with members, going carefully over each recommendation and providing answers where required. The use of the Royal Theatre for physical training and recreative games was also discussed. Mr McNicol said that he was very pleased at the desire on the part of the committee to get down to business and added that he would at all times welcome any communications from them as he felt sui*e that they would contain some suggestion provocative of thought or action on his part.
