MOUTOA DRAINAGE BOARD.

MO NTH L Y AIE ETIN G. The monthly meeting of the Afoutoa Drainage Board was presided over by th e Chairman (Trustee F S. Easton). Also present were Trustees R. E. Downes, AY. 11. Smith, E. 11. Robinson, and the Clerk (Air G. V. Frasor), An apology for absence was received from Trustee A. 11. E. AA r all.

.The treasurer reported that the bank balance to date was £35 8s 1 td in credit and the balances of th e main ledger accounts were as follows: General Ac.., dr., £lB 5s Gd; Interest Ac., cr., £53 14s sd. The report was adopted and accounts amounting to £4l 4s 2d were passed for payment. The foreman (Air AY. F. Kruse) reported as follows: —

“During the first week in September the flood gates were attended to, cuts in stop banks were attend ed to. and the dragging out of flood deposit carried out in the Alain Drain, Kara Kara North and South, Lean’s and Cook’s drains. Early in the week there was* a fresh in the river that came over the flood gates and the stop banks along both sides of the river. The gates did not open for four days and there was more water in the river than inside (lie gates.

“During lh ( . second week silt was removed from the front of the Hood gates and the work of filling up the cut in the slop bank was completed. Trimming and dragging Cook’s drain was also carried out. Other work attended to during the month was the dragging out of flood deposits from Smith’s outlet and dragging Carter’s drain. Thirty chains of Cook’s drain was trimmed, dragged and cleaned but owing to the depth of water in the Kara Kara North Drain it was impossible to clear the swangrass from th(> bottom of this drain.”

Th 0 report was received. The chairman reported that quotations for the renovation and painting of the Board’s house and also for other repair work had been received and after discussing these matters with the local members he had authorised that the work be proceeded with. The chairman’s action was endorsed by the meeting.

A circular letter was read from the N.Z. Land Drainage Board Association re suggested- winding-up and the following resolution was carried “that the Board approves of the suggestion lo wind up the affairs of the Land Drainage Board’s Association and requests the early return of this Board’s share of the surplus funds.”

A further letter was received from, the Audit Department in connection with the practice adopted in debiting discounts off all rates levied to the General Account. The Clerk’s letter to the Audit Department in regard to the matter was read and approved and following a discussion of the principle involved it was unanimously agreed to support the Clerk in the stand he had taken.

A revieAv of the operations of the Local Government Loans Board for the year ending 31st March, 1939 was tabled. Two letters from the Social Security Department requesting information in connection with certain of the Board’s employees Avere read, the clerk adA'ising that the necessary particulars had already been furnished. Correspondence from the Department of Labour Avas also read and received. The matter of selecting a tenant for the Board’s house Avas left in the hands of the chairman and the clerk.
