AN INTERESTING THEORY.
FIBRE WORKERS AND GOITRE
“Here is something worth following up,” said a district resident to our representative yesterday. “Some time ago a young lady friend of the family'secured a position in New Zealand Woolpack and Textiles, Ltd. For some years prior to that she had‘been troubled with a goitre but when we saw her again recently we noticed that the growth had perceptibly become smaller — so much so that we could not help remarking on the fact. ‘Oh ; yes,’ the young lady said. ‘Soon after I 1
started work at the Woolpack factory my goitre started to soften and gradually it is going away. I have not received any treatment for it and on chancing a remark about the incident to fellow employees I was informed that there had been at least three similar cases among the factory girls.’ ” “The Foxton borough water supply possesses a very high iodine content,” said our representative. “Perhaps this has something to do with it.”
“Maybe,” remarked the informant, “but the young lady is not living in Foxton and would partake of very little town supply, if any, during a working day. It is thought that the fibre has something to do with it. In any case the matter is worth investigating. If there is anything in it, who knows, the phormiurii tenax may be able to produce a cure for this most prevalent maladv.”
