» NEW ZEALAND, LOWEST IN WORLD FOR FATALITIES Though safety propaganda ar.d the Government’s campaign against the delinquent motorist are a recent development in New Zealand, the Dominion, nevertheless, has the proud position of being top' of the world’s list for the smallness of fatal highway accidents in relation to the number of motor-vehicles on the roads. In second and third positions are South Africa and Canada. ’At the other end of the list are Germany and Italy. Britain is in middle position. The figures for nine countries listed are: — Automobile deaths per 10,000 motor vehicles New Zealapd 7.4 " South Africa . .■ 8.9 Canada 9.9 Denmark 12.5 United States 13.6 Australia 13.9 England and Wales .. . 30.6 Germany 46.6 Italy 59.4 These returns, which are the latest bearing on the international aspect of the safety problem, were produced by Mr C. Bland, chief traffic inspector of the Auckland City Council, last week, as evidence of the generally high standard of skill and care of Dominion motorists.
