HOROWHENUA RUGBY UNION.
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING.
A meeting of the Management Committee of the Management Rugby‘Union was held in Levin on Tuesday evening.
Mr K. Ransfield, reporting on the- match between Punnhau and Wanderers on Saturday, stated that he had to order R. Knox of the latter team to the sideline for punching a tackier. The player appeared before the Committee and said that when he was tackled ho put his hand down to fend it off and made no attempt to punch the tackier. He had never been ordered off before. Some of the members who saw the match advised the meeting that the player’s explanation was identical with the incident, with the result that he was not penalised but cautioned.
The, referee of the game between Athletic and Rahui on Saturday referred to the conduct “of a spectator on the sideline who abused him and was a nuisance. The President remarked that it was a serious matter for a spectator to go on the field and argue the point with a referee. He thought it was time the Committee took a stand. Mv D. Richards said he was told that the referee held the game up to go and argue with, the spectator. He was of the opinion that both sides of the matter should he heard before any action was taken. Mr. Jones held Ufat a referee’s work was a very •difficult one and the Committee should support them every time.
Mr Mulcahy supported the previous speaker, adding that it was distasteful for a referee to have to take abuse from spectators. It was resolved to ask the spectator concerned to appear before the next meeting of the committee before any action was taken. On account of having to travel via Shannon through the road at Whirokino being in flood, travelling allowances of £1 each .were granted to the Wanderers and Moutoa Estate Clubs. The Foxton Football Club wrote asking what had been done with the Easton Cup for competition fynong primary schools of the district and thought if it was revived the standard of football in schools would bo improved.
It was decided to institute enquiries in regard to this and other trophies. A short discussion took place on the possibility of arranging a third grade representative match and it was decided to extend an invitation to the Levin (District High School fifteen to meet the third grade representatives at the. Levin Domain on Saturday, July 18th at 1.45 p.m. sharp. Mr D. McKenzie, in reply to a letter from the Committee, advised that if the ball tvas knocked on at all, even.if it'was caught "by the player before reaching the ground, the hall should be brought back for the scrummage. If the ball was knocked on from the line-out and a fair catch made, this should be given and not the knock on.— Received.
The Athletic Football Chib pointed out that its first match Avith Rahui Avas played on the latter’s ground and the second on July 4th at Kuku. Even though there AVas a shortage of grounds Athletic Avas due for a home game on July 4th and therefore asked that some alloAvance for travelling be made.
The Committee could make no grant, but pointed out that the same thing had 'occurred in Foxton 'on the previous AA r eek, it being overcome by the club preparing another ground.
