NOTES FROM A SOLICITOR’S CASE-BOOK.
“Young 1 Jim Clarke broke his leg doing an heroic act and consequently lost .three months’ wages. Ho stopped a bolting horse and thus prevented tragedy striving at a group of children who were, playing further down the road. He in-' terviewed me to see if he could get any compensation from the owner of the horse. I had to advise him that, even if he could prove the owner was negligent in allowing the horse to bolt, he could not get damages, because his act was quite voluntary. Had he been a traffic policeman he would have succeeded because he would have had a duty to interfere.” “A man whose name I will not divulge called to-day and was very upset because the wife, whom he had divorced, continued to use his name. I told him that he could not prevent her and she could continue to use his name even if she acquired another by marrying again. Anybody can change their names as often as they like, but, for the sake of general convenience, let alone the confusion it would cause to matters of wills and deeds, it is not advisable to do so. If you don’t like the names your parents gave you, you can choose others for yourself, and you can obtain tangible proof of your new name by executing a deed poll, duly giving notice of your change from Dot Dash to Delysia Printemps.” The above extracts are from a new. and interesting feature running in “The New Idea,” the threepenny weekly paper for Australian and New Zealand women. It is entitled “Notes from a Solicitor’s iChseBook,” and deals with the endless interesting cases that come under the notice of a legal man during the course of his business. “The New Idea” is now on sale at all newsagents—price 3d.
