LOST IN THE CLOUDS.
PILOT MAKES A FORCED > LANDING. Whakatane, July 17. A forced landing was made by Mr (M. H. Bateman In a Hawke’s Bay-East Aero Club machine in a seven-acre paddock of the Whakatane Domain at 1.30 p.m. to-day. Plying alone, Mr Bateman left Hastings for Gisborne and lost his way in cloudy weather over the hills. He landed at. Whakatane with only tw6 gallons of petrol in the tank. After refuelling he took off on less than 200 yards of runway. He struck a pine .tree with the end of the left lower wing and swerved dangerously, %it gained the’desired altitude and arrived at Gisborne at 4.30 p.m.
