THE MADDEN MURDER

PRICE FOUND GUILTY. DEATH' SENTENCE PAS SED. Napier, May 25. The jury engaged in the trial of Charles Edward Price, charged with murder, to-day paid a second visit to the scene of the alleged crime. Following the hearing of evidence regarding the size of the roll of notes in Price’s possesson when he visited the Te Aute Hotel, the Court adjourned until Monday and the jury departed to Argyll East. Norman John Guild, taxi-driver, and Gordon Hart, son of the licensee of the hotel, described the roll of notes respectively as being the size of a penny and a half-crown. They were shown the roll of notes by Mr Justice Blair and both stated it was smaller than the roll produced by Price.

The roll shown by His Honour was prepared by the jury and consisted of one £5 note and three £1 notes.

Yesterday the court was crowded to hear the addresses of the two counsels in the Anal stages of the ease. After the Judge’s summingup' the jury retired and after a little more than an hour, returned with a verdict of guilty. Price was not visibly moved when the verdict was returned against him, nor did he appear to sulfer any stress when, donning the black cap, -Mr Justice Blair pronounced sentence.

The only sign he showed of emotion was that when asked if he had anything to say why the sentence of death should not be passed upon him, he almost shouted “No.”
