FATAL FEVER ATTACK
MILK FROM INFECTED COW
The death of an elderly man, caused by undulant fever, was reported by the inspector of the Wlaimari County Council at. a meeting at Christchurch on Thursday night. Infection w r as caught by drinking milk from a cow infected with germs after having suffered from contagious abortion.
The inspector said it was the only case he had known in Waimari, although he had known four such cases in the North Island. The disease was not until recently specified as undulant fever. In all cases the persons affected were great milk drinkers, or were continually handling cattle or milk. The man who had died had drunk large quantities from the particular cow.
A member said he had known of the disease for some time. It had been commonly treated as influenza. The inspector said the disease was not a result of dirty dairies, but of a germ in a few cows.
