SECRET WIRELESS.
THE NEW MICRO-RAY,
EXPERIMENTS IN SYDNEY. There is a probability of the latest in wireless, the micro-ray, being used in Sydney at ,an early date. An intimation to this effect was made to the Sydney City Council last week, when application by Messrs Julius Poole and Gibson for Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia), Limited, for permission to erect a wireless mast 200 ft. high on the top of a city building was under consideration. The Workg Committee recommended that the application for the construction of the mast, which will be 270 ft. from the footpath level, be refused. “The council should not endorse this recommendation,” said Mr. Garden, “as I understand this mast is needed for the new Marconi micro-ray, which - Amagamated Wireless (Australasia) intend using here. In view of this, the request for permission to erect the mast should go back to the Works Committee for favourable consideration.” . The council decided that the Works Committee-should deal with the question in time for the next meeting.
When asked subsequently whether the proposed new mast would be used for the micro-ray, the managing-director of Amalgamated Wireless, Mr E. T. Fisk, would only say that the mast, if erected, would be for experimental purposes generally. From other sources, it was learned that efforts were to be made to establish plant that would enable the micro-ray to be used in Sydney.
The new micro-ray, now operating on the Continent, is described by wireless experts as a beam which can keep secrets, and across which messages can be typed. It provides additional safety for aviators, and by it urgent traffic messages to be expedited. The microray operates on a wave-length of 17 centimetres, which is the shortest ever put to commercial use. This compares with the normal wave-length of 900 metres for civil air traffic,, and of 1380 metres for route traffic messages. It is said that under the ray television will be possible by a micrometric wave band without interference with other forms of radio communication.
