SHANNON SCHOOL COMMITTEE
MEMBERS AT VARIANCE. At the Shannon School Commit, tee meeting on Tuesday evening the chairman (Mr L. H. Best) and members became heated and excited. Banging his fist-on the table, the Chairman declared that members had gone behind his back in matters concerning- the school. Ho had been stabbed in the back and had no desire to stay in the chair without support. He had ceased ill his efforts for the Queen Carnival in the meantime because of this. Accusations were made-, against members, and Mr Campbell rose to speak but Mr Best ordered him to sit down. Mr Campbell: I have been insulted. .
Mr Bass: The only thing members have done is to seek to improve, the position by bringing greater benefit to the school by suggesting co-op-eration among local institutions. We have spoken of the matter and intended to have the matter discussed this evening.
Mr Best ancl Mr Campbell then exchanged words, Mr Best offering to tajkie his coat off and settle ,it. Mr Bass, continuing, said it appeared that the' committee which was supporting the farmers’ queen had collected a good sum of money already for its candidate. The other committees for the Town Queen were finding it difficult to get things started, and thought perhaps,- it would be better to make a combined effort for the School, Plunket Nurse and District Nurse, and with this idea in view they intended to discuss the matter. Mr Best said that he and Mr Guerin were the only ones on the Committee who were organising for the farmers, and that he must keep faith with those from whom he had collected for school funds only. Mi" Guerin then moved that the Carnival be not proceeded with. This failed to find a seconder. Mr Ventry-Smith: Let us appoint the other committees and work together and the results will be better. .. . , 'Mr Best: If you do you won t get the support from the farming community. Mr Coates: The farmers always have and will support any good cause. Mr Ventry-Smith then moved that the School Cbmmittee. invite others to link up with them in their effort, as they could'not expect to be on the cadge all the time. Mr Best: Those that get out and get it, deserve it. Old troubles were brought up and a good deal of argument took place, but on a vote being taken there were four for the motion and four against. Mr Campbell did not vote and the motion was declared lost on the chairman’s casting vote. More discussion followed, and Messrs Ventry-Smith and.Radford handed in their resignations, The meeting then became calmei and after a further talk the resignations were withdrawn and the hatchet buried, all agreeing to go forward together for the general good of the school and pupils.
