FOXTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
COMMITTEE MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Foxton District High School Committee was held last evening, presided over by Mr J. K. Hornblow. There were also present: Messrs M. E. Perreau, I. D. Mudford, W. McKenzie, H. J. Reid, S. E. Cowley, R, Rangiheuea and the headmaster (Mr P. A. Mason). Apologies for absence were received; from Messrs G. P. Smith and P. Mail’s. The chairman welcomed back to the committee Messrs Mudford' and McKenzie and congratulated them upon their recovery from recent serious illnesses. Correspondence was received from the Manawatu-Oroua School Committees Association, enclosing report of recent Dominion conference and inviting the committee to link' up.; —Decided to inform the association that the committee could not conveniently attend meetings and that direct contact with the Board was sufficiently satisfactory. The headmaster referred to several matters in connection with repairs to buildings, etc. It was decided that Messrs Perroau and Rangiheuea attend to. sand-drift in the playground and fencing and that the Board architect’s attention be directed to building repairs. The chairman, stated that he had given instructions to have urgent repairs carried out to the drainage system at the boys lavatory. The breakage was due to the earthquake. It was decided to/ refer the matter to the Board. The committee endorsed the headmaster’s correspondence to the Board re the laxity' of certain Maori parents in connection with sending their children to school. Mr Rangiheuea said he had discussed! the matter with those concerned which should obviate the necessity for instituting legal proceedings. The financial statement indicated that unless special efforts were made to meet expenditure a debit of £2O would accrue at the end of the present term. The headmaster stated that the staff had decided to hold a children’s fancy dress ball on the evening of Tuesday, October 30th. to assist the finances. The committee decided to be responsible for the catering and decorations. It was also resolved to convene a meeting' of ladies to co-operate with the committee. The visitors (Messrs Smith and Reid) reported upon certain matters requiring attention, which were agreed to. The headmaster reported that the average attendances had dropped to primary 322, and secondary 51. Messrs Perreau and Rangiheuea wore appointed visitors for the month. The •servicing of school typewriters was left in the hands of the headmaster with power to act.
