MENTAL PATIENT ESCAPEES
TRAVEL FROM CHRISTCHURCH TO AUCKLAND.
Auckland,. Last Night. Tavo patients avlio escaped from the Sunnvside Mental Hospital, near Christchurch, almost tA\ r o Aveeks .ago, succeeded in making their Avay to Auckland. They have noAV presented, themselves to the Auckland Mental Hospital authorities, and are in the institution at Avondale. While details of how the men came to leave Sunnyside are not available, the patients, both of whom are fairly young, eridently experienced no difficulty in crossing from Lyttelton to Wellington by the inter-island ferry steamer and, avoiding detection, they travelled north to Auckland by easy stages, walking some of the distance and obtaining rides from motorists.
The men had evidently been in Auckland several days before they gave themselves up to the authorities. To do so they travelled by tramcar, and during the journey commented to a. man on the tram that they had beeojne tired of travelling about. They seemed especially satisfied they had been able to escape suspicion throughout their long journey and that they Avere returning to supervision on their oAvn initiative.
