ARREST ON EVE OF WEDDING

'Christchurch, October 2. Arrested at Knox Church, Christchurch, on the eve of his wedding, ' John Varcoe, aged 20, a labourer, appeared before Mr E. D. Mosley, / S.M., this morning, and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour for a breach of his probation of four months, jyul for a similar period for false pretences. On .a charge of making a false declaration to the Registrar of Marriages, the accused pleaded .guilty, 'and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. The police said that Varcoe ordered donation receipt books, re"•'•esenting that he was collecting for the Ashburton High School Old Pupils’ Association, and canvassed in’ the city, collecting a considerable sum. He had previously, been convicted for fraud.

Counsel for the accused said that he came of a well-known Ashburton family, and had a fine record at school. Recently he had suffered serious illnesses.
