EAT YOUR OWN BUTTER

AND PRODUCE BRAINS,

During a Press interview at Auckland on Thursday Mr G. B. Shaw said that those who thought New Zealand could live on credit were mistaken. Tlie world was living on cash, and from hand-to-mouth at that.

Mr. Fraser: What about the internal development of New Zealand?

“That is your own business,” replied Mr Shaw. “The tendency •>£ the world to-day is to become selfsufficient. The idea has been for New Zealand to produce nothing but butter, and for the rest of the world to eat it. At present other people are saying: ‘We will not have you shoving your butter down our throats.” It was no use taking in one person’s washing and thinking one could live on that. People were now refusing to trade with New Zealand, were milking their own cow's, and making their own butter. New Zealand had even been shoved oft the gold standard although she produced gold, which had been paralysed and cornered and was no longer a valuable commodity. In conclusion Mr Shaw said: What *you have to do in these islands is to eat your own butter and see that everybody in New Zealand has plenty of butter to his bread. When -you have* reached this point, stop producing butter and produce something else. A voice: What? Mr. Shaw: Start- producing brains, perhaps.
