THE UNEMPLOYED.
POSSIBILITY OF THE DOLE. In the course of an interview at Wellington, the Hon. A. Hamilton, Minister of Employment, said that much useful and reproductive work had been done under No. 5 scheme but it was recognised there was difficulty in providing sufficient work to keep all the men employed, especially in the cities. It might be necessary, under some national public work scheme, to employ the men in the country and it was not outside the pale of- possibility the country would have to adopt some form of dole payment to those for whom they were unable to find work
This district can provide work of a national character which would find employment -for a large number of men over a lengthy period, The Whirokino highway and deviation is admittedly a work of national importance, the undertaking of which, by reason of its extraordinary nature, would impose an unfair financial burden upon the Mnnnwatn County Council. The Public Works Department has carried out work of less importance oil the same highway controlled by the Makarn County Council, which local body, however, has been more insistent than the Manawntn County 'Council. Then there is the much-discussed Wlhirokino cut, to relieve a large area, of fertile land from periodical inundation, but in this case, those whose land will benefit should be compelled to hear a fair proportion of the cost, thus enabling relief workers to be employed full time.
