WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
MANAWHENUA GROUP ~ MEETING.
The local Town Hall looked particularly gay and inviting on Thursday afternoon Avhen members of the Foxton committee had prepared it for the summer meeting of the Manawhenua group of the Women’s Institutes. The day Avas ideal and it avus pleasing to think of the spirit of comradeship which had inspired members to travel such long distances to he present, for there Avas an attendance of some 250 members.
Airs A. P. Easton, president of the Foxton Institute, presided. Associated Avith her were Airs S. Barber, group convener, and delegates from each group; also Mrs W'aringTaylor, a member of the Executive of the Wellington Federation. The president extended a Avelcome to the visitors who represented Levin, Shannon,. Opiki, Tokomaru. Koputaroa, Oroua and Kimberley. She also apologised for the unavoidable absence of Aliss Jerome Spencer, Airs Kelso and Aliss Grant in addition to Linton’s representatives. Mrs At. Ross presided at the piano and the proceedings commenced .with the singing of the Institute song.
At a suitable juncture Afrs Af. E. Perrean (Mayoress) voiced the appreciation of members at Mrs Waring Taylor’s long service as an executive member and on behalf of the Foxton Institute, presented her Avith n very pretty bouquet.

In the group competition “Best article from a Flour Bag,” Mrs A. P. Easton was the successful competitor with a beautifully embroidered tea cloth bearing the Institute badge. Mrs Craw, of Linton, was aAvardecl second place. The competition Avas avcll contested, and the Avork Avas of a high order,’ making the judging a difficult matter. Rosultiw from Afrs Easton annexing the competition the Foxton Institute secures the Manawhenua Banner for this year, and in this connection the group is indebted to Airs Sanderson, of Shannon, for her beautiful handicraft.
The local Institute was responsible for a very charming display of handicraft which formed a feature of the meeting. Considerable interest. was evinced in the exhibit and special mention may be made of Airs Tremaine’s ivonderful contribution of pine-needle Avork, barbolo, soft tovs and various other exhibits.
The programme included a A r ery humorous debate: “Should husbands accompany their wives on holiday?” The affirmative was taken by Afesdames Robbie and D. R. Barron (Foxton) while Afesdamcs Bovis and Waring Taylor (Shannon) spoke on the negative side. Both sides were more than well sustained, the result being that the voting was equal. A plavette, “The Rest Cure,” Avas most successfully staged hv the Foxton Dramatic 'Circle, the characters being taken by Alisses Stevenson and Tbynne and Afesdames W. Af Thomas, R. Byne and J. Af. Thomson.
Afternoon tea provided an enjoyable interlude and afforded an opportunity for friendly discourse, the Institute spirit of co-operation and harmony being much in eviience.
Mrs S. Barber later contributed two vocal items which were greatly appreciated. The proceedings terminated about 5 o’clock when one and all returned to their homes with memories of a delightful afternoon.
