GAOL AND FLOGGING
FOR ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE

The gravity of the crime of robbery with violence was emphasised by Mr. Justice Smith in the Auckland Supreme Court yesterday when he passed sentence on Francis John Peckbam, a Fijian ship’s fireman, and William Keogh, a labourer, who had been found guilty in connection with the holdup of a cashier in 'Upper Victoria Street, on May 27,- and the theft of over £l4O, which Avas being conveyed to Messrs Parkinson’s for the payment of Avages. “Much as I dislike it,” said his Honour, “I must decide that physical violence such as ivas used in this case must be met by physical punishment as Avell as by imprisonment.” He passed a sentence of three years’ hard labour and a flogging of 12 strokes, on Peckbam and two years’ hard labour Avith a similar flogging on Keogh.
