This morning- a football team from Levin North played against the local primary football team on Easton Park, the game resulting in a draw. Messrs George Smith and John Newton have received another invitation to conduct a Community Sing in the Opera House, Palmerston North, on Wednesday, July 27th. When is Foxton going to hear these two performers? On Friday afternoon'the Foxton District High School A . and B basketball teams and foSTball' team journeyed to Levin and played against Levin District High School teams. The local basketball A, team was 'defeated by 22 —9 and the B team won, 12 —5. The Levin foot- : ball team was suee&sSM in winning by 22—5.- / . V„-r Following the filling of the benzine tank with petrol, flames enveloped a large car, owned by Mr. Ted Conlan, of -Oroua Downs, which was standing outside the Oroua Downs dairy factory yesterday afternoon. It is. surmised that a hot exhaust pipe was the cause of the outbreak, as the engine had been stopped and nobody was smoking. Willing helpers got to work with sacks, water and sand, but although failing to, get the upper hand, saved the engine from damage, as well as the' two front tyros. The ear was uninsured.
A very successful and enjoyable 500 and bridge evening was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs W. Ross, of Purcell Street last, evening. Apart from the social side the gathering had ’also for its object the raising of funds to provide clothing for the children of needy parents. Mr. Rough and Mrs Martin won the 500 tournament and Mr. W. E. Barber and Miss Wanklvn the bridge. Messrs Perronu and Barber, on behalf of those present,.thanked the host and hostess for their hospitality and for assistance to a worthy cause. Upwards of £2 10/- was collected . Some thoughts on the true scope of education were given by Mr. J. R. Sutcliffe, principal of Scots College, when speaking at the annual reunion dinner of Scots old boys, at Wellington on Thursday. The object of a school should not be to make men merely artisans or professional men, but straight, honest, decent citizens. Subjects should be taught of true educational value —subjects that made one think. He did not believe in teaching typewriting at college; that was a purely mechanical subject, and, he might have added, a scandalous waste of .public money.
The birth of a child occurred on the limited express, just before its arrival at Auckland last Saturday morning. The mother, who was accompanied by her husband, was travelling in a sleeping compartment, and she was attended by Dr. T. G. Gray, Director-General of Mental Hospitals, ami a nurse from St. Helen’s Hospital, both of whom were passengers on the train. When the express arrived in Auckland the St. John Ambulance was waiting, together with another doctor, to convey the mother to her home at Mount Eden.
