LONG BURIED TREASURE.
QUEST IN MEXICO. AIDS OF SPIRITUALISM. Lured by rumours of buried treasure in the region of Tlazmalac, many natives of Alexico are discovering a new interest in archaeology and exploration, which extends in some cases to the use of spiritualism in the hope of receiving communications from Indian chiefs who are supposed to have buried the treasure 400 years ago. As a result of the crowds who are thronging to seek the hidden wealth, the explorers who discovered the buried relics of Ihe past and who are interested in the historical phase of the unearthed ruins, arc being besciged with appeals for definite directions as to the probable location of the treasure. Gems, gold, idols, pottery, tiles and precious metals are said to have been concealed in this region by a chief of Tlazmalac, who sought- to make his wealth safe before he left his native city and went to meet his death fighting the Spaniards in the time of the Conquest. In addition to the interest awakened among the natives by the prospect of sudden riches, foreign archaeologists are expressing enthusiasm over the research that is being carried on by the explorers. Archaeological societies in both Berlin and London have written the Mexican authorities asking l’or details concerning the discoveries, in Guerrero. It is believed that the remains of early Alexican civilisation unearthed here will reveal facts hitherto unknown about pre-con-quest days.
