THE HEMP MARKET.
SEPTEMBER GRADING RETURNS.
The grading returns for hemp, tow and stripper slips for the month of September, have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as; follows:
The detailed particulars of the hemp are: —
Twenty bales at Pic-ton were graded super fine, 40 at Auckland, 46 at Wellington, 75 at Foxton were rejected. Nine at Auckland and 9 at Lyttelton were condemned. The number of bales in each grade were as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:—Super fine 20 (15), good fair 365 (319), high fair 2,175 (3,254), low fair 1,645 (1,659), common 826 (409), rejected 161 (165), condemned 18 (nil), a total of 5,210 bales, as against 5,821 bales graded during Ihe same period last year, a decrease of fill bales.
The number of bales graded at each port was: — Auckland 930, Wellington 1,858, Foxton 1,581, Wairoa 97, Pieton 43, Blenheim 101, Dunedin 56, Pt. Chalmers 8, Bluff 433, Lyttelton 103. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded:—
Eighteen bales at Auckland, 32 at Wellington, 11 at Wairoa, one at the Bluff and four at Lyttelton were condemned.
The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Ist grade 173 (319), 2nd grade 860 (817), 3rd grade 251 (105), condemned 66 (36), a total of 1,350 bales, as against 1,277 bales graded last year, an increase of 73 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 279, Wellington 534, Foxton 207, Wairoa 28, Pieton 17, Blenheim 36, Port Chalmers 6; Bluff 201, Lyttelton 17, Dunedin 25.
Stripper Slips.—Five bales at Auckland and 30 at the Bluff were graded 2nd grade. -Ninety-two bales at the Bluff were passed for export and 8 bales were condemned.
The total number graded was 135 bales as against 177 graded during the same period last year, a de-r-reaso of 42 bales.
The High Commissioner’s cable, dated 9th instant, reads: Manila market firm; J grade, October-Dccember shipments, sold up to £46. Output Ist January to 4th October, 972,000 bales, against 946,000 for same period last year. Sisal market quiet and value nominally unchanged. New Zealand market continues very quiet. Highpoints October-December shipments sold for £37, fair £34.
