SWALLOWED A CHEQUE.
A POLICE STATION INCIDENT,
A driver, Robert Campbell, alias Robert Kcmora aged 26, was charged in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court this week with altering a cheque for £586 drawn on the Commercial Bank of Australia, Wellington. He was also charged with attempting to have the cheque acted upon. Constable Hodges gave evidence that the accused had at first made a statement denying his guilt, and then afterwards said he wanted to make a clean breast of everything and clear the matter up. In his second statement the accused said he had copied the initials of one of the bank tellers on a cheque. The accused would not; sign the statement after it had been typed out. The following morning, however/ the accused intimated he would sign, hut threw the pen on the statement, grabbed the cheque, crumpled it in his mouth, and commenced chewing it. Campbell was given an emetic, and the cheque was eventually recovered.
After hank officials had given evidence, the accused pleaded not guilty, and was committeed to the Supreme Court for trial.
