FOUR VOTES IN ONE.
THE GAME OF POLITICAL TRICKERY. HOW TO WORK THE ORACLE. The British Miners Federation a little time back earned a bad reputation by enforcing a method of balloting which was a deception of its own -members and, also, the general public. The scheme was very simple, but a palpable trick. This is how it was done. As many as three and four voters were called upon to vote “yes” or “no” on the whole of these in one vote. Here is an example : (1) Are you in favour of six hours if day? (2) Are you in favour of an increase in wages? (3) Are you in favour of Nationalisation of Mines? Yes —No —Place a cross'opposite “Yes” or “No” in the space provided for the purpose. Thus the whole of the questions were taken as one and the voter required to say “Yes” or “No” to the lot in globo. What man could vote “No” on an increase of wages and yet when the miners voted “Yes” on that it was presen-, ted as their vote in favour of “Nationalisation of Mines.” . Colonial workmen would have kicked against a faked ballot such as that but it operated in England.
