SENTENCE TO BE CARRIED OUT.
STATEMENT BY CONDEMNED
MAN
The case of the Maori Hakaraia te Kalin, who was convicted at the Supreme Court at Hamilton of the murder of Patrick Elliott at Ongaroto on Sunday, 27th March, and who was recently sentenced to death by the Hon. Mr. Justice Stringer, was considered yesterday morning at a special meeting* of the Executive Council, presided over by'His Excellency the Governor-General. The decision come to was that the Executive Council, after very fully considering the case, could not see any grounds for interfering in the proper carrying out of the sentence. The Minister of Justice, the Hon. E. P. Lee, in making the announcement, stated that the condemned man had made a statement before a Stipendiary Magistrate in the Auckland Prison, to the effect that he had shot Elliott, and afterwards robbed him, but that the shooting was accidental.
