Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1921. TOWN BEAUTIFYING SCHEME.

MR. LEIGH HUNT’S lecture on Towu Planning, delivered in (lie Town Hall on Thursday'night, should stimulate a greater interest in local beautifying schemes, and incidentally assist the local Beautifying Society’s effort to raise funds for this purpose. It should have an even wider effect by inspiring residents to take a keener interest in beautifying their own homes by the planting of suitable flowering shrubs and plants, and cultivating the growth of fruits, flowers and vegetables. Nearly every residence in the. borough has at least a quarter acre section, and if this was nicely laid out Foxtou would in time become a place of beauty, tv. There is no excuse for filthy hack yards except downright laziness and carelessness. The joint operations of the Borough Council and Beautifying Society in improving and beautifying the various reserves within the borough should 'have a good effect upon citizens in taking a pride in their own home environment. The good work done by the local Horticultural Society must not be overlooked, for since its existence there lias been a keener local interest in the cultivation of fruit, flowers and vegetables.

WE hope the public will take a real live interest in the Beautifying Society’s Carnival to raise funds for a town beautifying scheme. Several committees have been formed to raise money which will find its way through various avenues to the general fund. An organiser has been appointed to supervise the running of the Carnival, and it wit! be his duty to keep in touch with all the various committees and keep things moving. Willi every one interested there is no reason to doubt that sufficient money will be raised to inaugurate a beautifying scheme which will in time make Foxton the prettiest and most attractive residential town in the Dominion.
