LIBERTY LEAGUE AND THE PUBLIC CONSCIENCE.

To ihi* Editor. - Sir, —Your lender under the above heading in Tuesday's issue 's instructive, innsumeli that it opens a very wide Held for seieuis thought. We have seen by some of your contemporaries that Liberty Leagues have been formed in mnnv purls of the country, and while many of us are of opinion that a great deal ol the reports are inspired, and ask ourselves to what it all part ends, it is disquieting. You mention, Mr Editor, the danger of the labour extremist. Why not a>o the laud extremist, the proliteer extremist, the interest extremist, and the many oilier ills that are tile outcome of an unbalanced state of society. 1 maintain, Sir, that it is not the time for these intimidating tactics — la,dies that can only result in creating' a physiology of unreal, mistrust and discontent, bather it is a time for our statesmen to lake courage in both hands, and in reforming our basic laws, place the country again on a firm foundation, tiring content to our people, and make that liberty we are prone to boast so much of more real than imaginary. This is the lime lor us to realise that the present unrest is the outcome of a cause, and. to remedy matters the cause must lie removed. This will not be accomplished by the shrieking extremist, but by careful thought, an open mind, a spirit of tolerance, and a readiness to consider the aspirations of all classes of society. Me have, during the past lew years, been promised a new world. I tun optimistic enough to believe there are men in all ranks of life anxious to bring this about, and the Press, Parliament, and the (lovernmenf can assist in this very laudable work. With the combination of the forces the great apathy of the people can be overcome, then true progress will result; I uni, etc., A. C. HILLIEK. 10/10/20.
