CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor.) Sir. —I hove read sometime somewhere that ".Music hath charms to sooth the savage beast." Now, Sir, ! do not wish to infer that there are any savage . beasts in Foxton. but somehow or other music stirs Up discord instead of harmony locally; Foxton gained notoriety oven - the proposed purchase of a secondhand piano of German manufacture for tlie school, a farcical incident which will go down to history. Now, Sir, we do not want a repetition of petitions and “frame-ups”, between the Council and the Band. The Band is deserving of every encouragement by (he Council and townspeople. Many of them, Sir, have their own instruments, and for the love of the art give their lime freely and voluntarily.' They are only too pleased to appear in public, and have 1 done so for cdncerls and shows. The Borough provides them with a practice room, which the Band appreciates. Now, Sir, if the Counei! would leave out (he compulsory part of the conditions and give (hem the annual grant, and leave it to (he Band when and where to play, the public, I am informed, will have nothing to complain about. Surely, Sir, this little difference can be got over by both parlies in a spirit of sweet reasonableness. —1 am, etc., WELLWISHEK.

(To the Editor.) Sir. —I noticed , that a Hawk os Hay fanner was lined £I,OO for failing to destroy rabbits' on his property. Well, Sir, despite the efforts of some conscientious settlers in the Himatangi district to destroy, bunny. there arc one or two men who arc not taking steps to destroy this pest, and their property remains as a breeding ground and a menace and loss to those who are. doing (heir duly. I would suggest, Sir, that the Inspector make a few searching inquiries in reference to rabbit; extermination a few miles from your township. Trusting he will take the hint, for it is one thing to procure poison, but another, to lay it. — Yours, etc., EAUMEH,

(To the Editor.) Sir. —J notice in your Thursday's issue the report of the Borough Council in regard to the Borough Band. On reading the different statements of the councillors at the meeting, one would take it for granted that each member of the Bund was well paid for their services. Being a bandsman myself, I know what a sacrifice it means in giving up time to attending practices and playing out. A good band is a. worthy asset to any town. 1 am sure that the members of the local Band are prepared to do all they can for the of IPoxtbn. There arc quite sub y ent bandsmen in Foxtou to forth'a real good hand, but not under the present conditions. Why should the Band be bound down to play mi\ / every Saturday night (three nights it! Iront of the Town Hall and one night in Main Street) for the return oi b 7 per quarter from the Council* Jn conclusion, I feel sure that, if the public of Foxtou would support the Band they would have a band of which they would be justly proud.—■ f am, etc,, VISITING BANDSMAN,
