A number of English women have returned to monocles since Miss Violet Vanbrugh made her return to the London .stage in ‘‘Trimmed in Scarlet.” In this play the charming actress appears as a lady “of some importance notwithstanding,” who adds a black-rimmed Squire Bancroft sort of eye-glass to the piquant attractions of glowing auburn hair and revealing evening gowns. But there are few women who can wear the single glass with distinction, and few brave enough to face a crowded assembly with it. Philip Konawal, a Y.C., has been arrested at Ottawa for the murder of William Artiek at Hull, Quebec. The two men had a quarrel, which ended in a light, Arlick attempted to stub Konawal with a knife, Konawal led a Peace parade in Ottawa on the Saturday night. Corporal Konawal won his V.C, in November, 1917, while serving with the Canadian infantry. In two days’ lighting he killed at least 10 of the enemy single-handed. In one cellar he bayoneted three of the enemy, and in a crater, when unaccompanied, he attacked seven others, killing them all. He also captured two machiuc-guns, killing both crews.
When a Greek named Aristotle John Antypus appeared in the dock at the London Central Criminal Court, ‘charged with burglary, counsel for the prosecution said: “I should imagine that it is the lirst lime Aristitle lias appeared in the dock, and it requires no little courage to proceed against such an honoured name,” Aristitle came to England by way of Rumania and Russia, and his ship w.as torpedoed on the way. He was sent to prison for six months’ hard labour. Before the war the number of people holding British Government securities was 340,000; to-day it is well over' 20,000,000.
