THE NAIK TRAGEDY.
MURINE CHARGED WITH MURDER. Aimklami, Jan. 21. The tragedy which occurred at Naik, near Ngaruawhaia, on 23rd October last, when the eyes of a Hiirtceii-monllis-okl baby named Joan Alorine were gouged out, Avillt (lie result that death ensued, was recalled tin's morning, when Alberti Victor Alorine, Hie father of the child, avus charged at the Auckland Police Court with murder. Alorine, Avho lias been detained in Avondale Alental Hospital since Ids arrest, appeared in the dock wearing handcuffs, and looked forlorn and wretched in the extreme. He avus not represented by counsel. Evidence was on (lie lines of (lint given at Hie inquest. Constable Engrain, of Hunlly, stated that accused, when being removed to Hamilton, behaved like a maniac. He said that 1m bad stars in his eyes, and entreated the police to Jet him take them out. When placed in a padded cell lie tried to injure himself. Accused was committed fjjfc trial.
