Si’KAKrNf; at the Lord Mayor’s dinner at Sydney last week, the Australian Minister for Defence, Mr G, F. Pearce, said that the number of Australian troops embarked up to date was 100,949, and the number of troops now in the camps was 70,500. They were sending monthly 9,331 troops. For November, it,295 were being sent. These were reinforcements only. Before December 31st next 11,500 additional troops beyond the reinforcements already mentioned will have been sent abroad. There were altogether 50 training camps in Australia. To give an idea of the colossal scale of supply and equipment, Mr Pearce said i8,000,0001b of meal, 15,000,000!!) of bread, 226,000!!) of sugar, 17,500!!) of lea, and 3,000,0001 b of jam had been consumed in the Australian camps since the war broke out. They bad been able to supply rilles of the latest pattern tor tire whole ol their expeditionary ioices, and 25 per cent, had been manufactured at the small arms factory. Similarly, all requirements in small arms and ammunition had been met, and the large initial reserve lor each rifle was being steadily maintained by regular shipments to replace that expended in action. Approx! rnately 5,000,000 yards ol material had been used in the manufacture of clothing. There were 72 transports and 12 cargo ships being utilised by the Government. They had earned altogether about ,£1,600,000.
