THOSE BROKEN PLEDGES.
A CONFESSION,
WHO MADE IT?
Auckland, March
The Herald publishes a paragraph to the effect that a gentleman connected with journalism, in the course of a talk with one of the Eabour members a lew days ago in Wellington suggested to the latter that a mistake had been made in the breaking ol pledges by two ol their number. “ Ves," said the member, “I think so now, but the way we looked at it was this : The Massey crowd were too solid and too strong lor us. If we put them in power, why, in a week they would have been independent of us. Not so the Ward party. They simply cannot live without our support, and we can squeeze them just as mucn as ever we like. Besides, we never imagined that the public would take the breaking of pledges so seriously."
