SKATING.
Enthusiasm in skating seems to be maintained at the local rink, and of late the attendance of skaters has been geod at the public hall. Yesterday afternoon a good muster of ladies took advantage of the weekly assemblage reserved for their enjoyment, and a pleasant few hours rinking was indulged in. There are still to be found a few novices who are bent on mastering the art of how to “roll,” and their ardent endeavours to control their feet and retain their equilibrium adds a spice of merriment to the proceedings, and is always responsible for a good amount of good-natured and semi-sympathetic laughter on the part of the more experienced. The coming carnival is creating no small amount of interest, and in view of this the proprietor of the rink is making arrangements for all those who intend taking part in the Grand March to practice thoroughly. The march on the rollers, when neatly done, is extremely pretty from the spectator’s point of view, but owing to the sharp curves to be negotiated at various intervals considerable practice and experience is necessary. The nights s t aside for practice will be announced at the rink to-night, and all those who wish to take part are requested to notity Mr Levett as early as possible.
