A SHARP CHASE.
James Heuwood, an “old baud’’ well-known to the police, struck trouble on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs dialers, occupier of No. S, Ghuznee Street, Wellington, returned to her home at about 3.30 to find a man in her bedroom. When she appeared he bolted, but Mrs Chaters pluckily gave chase. Constable Coles, of the Mount Cook station, was near by at the time and joined in the pursuit, which was short and sharp, ending in the arrest of the man by Coles in Taranaki street. The man was Heuwood. It it stated that on him was a quantity of jewellery and some money which Mrs Chaters* found to be missing from her house. At the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, yesterday, James Henwood was charged with breaking and entering the premises of Emily Chator in Ghuznee street and stealing a lady’s silver watch and gold locket and cross, a pair of gold-rimmed spectacles, and 15s In money, to the total value of £2. When charged with the theft, accused said that a man named “ Scotty ” had sent him in. He admitted taking the watch. Accused appeared to have been drinking, but was not drunk. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. —N.Z, Times,
