The death is announced of the Karl of Sheffield, aged 77. The Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy of the Meeanee Mission, has been appointed to the rectorship of St. Patrick’s College, Weliugton, rendered vacant by the resignation of the Very Rev. Father A. Keogh. A London correspondent states that Mr John J. Fox, who was for some time an assistant in connection with the local Anglican Church, and is now studying at Oxford, is leaving this month on a visit to New Zealand. The strong winds yesterday caused a great deal of damage to trees, etc., throughout the district. Branches were broken off and in some cases trees have been completely uprooted. The annual-meeting of the Moutoa Hockey Club is advertised to take place in Mr Gardner’s hall, on Monday evening. A football [match in aid of the Walden Benefit fund is being played on the racecourse to-day. It is probable that the Sanson Club will play a match with a local team next Saturday in aid of the same fund.

Speaking at Newcastle, the Commonwealth Prime Minister, Mr Fisher, said he had pledged his ('Labour) pai ty to offer Britain, in the event of trouble, not only a Dreadnought, but the whole resources of the country. The strong winds experienced during the past couple of days backed up the river, causing it to overflow its banks in several places. A remarkable stale of affairs was disclosed at Carterton when the lime came for nomination of Mayor and Council for Carterton. There was no nomination for Mayor, and only three for the Council. Thus there is an extraordinary vacancy for the offices of Mayor and six councillors, which leads the News to remark that “ such a position is not creditable to Carterton, which is generally regarded as one of the most active and up-to-date boroughs in the Dominion.”
