THE WHEAT MARKET.
New York, April xB. Mr Patten prophesies that before many months the people of Europe will struggle for bread in famine-stricken queues. Mr Patten has engaged a detective to protect him, owing to the public indignation against his gambling in foodstuffs. Mr Wilson, Secretary of Agriculture at Washington, states that Patten is reckoning supplies too low : only one wheat corner succeeded, and that was conducted by Joseph of Egypt. Mr J. J. Hill prophesies that wheat will not return to low prices tor a long time. London, April 19. The Economist states that Pattea’s corner is far less important to the British working clases than any of the big past manipulations. It is evident that the high prices in London must be attributed to other causes than the Chicago manipulation. Beerbohm’s wheat estimates are for four months.
