TRAGEDY AT MANGAWEKA.

Man cuts his Wife’s Throat.

Then Jumps over a Cliff.

Mangawjska, November 5

F. Krebbs, a well-known resident at Mangaweka, who owns several houses, made a determined effort to murder his wife by cutting her throat with a razor last night. After the desperate act Krebbs jumped over a cliff, a sheer drop ot 300 ft., and the body was found this morning. A neighbour found Mrs Krebbs and sent fir a doctor, who put seven stitches in the wound. Mrs Krebbs is in a weak state.

Both parties have always seemed on friendly terms, and no cause is assigned for the sudden rash act. Details of the trageJy are meagre. It appears that F. A. Krebbs, a labourer, aged 36, generally a sober man, had been drinking for the last day or two. His wife, who is an invalid, asked her husband to ease her back. Soon after he placed his arm round her neck, lifted her chin, and cut his wife’s throat.

Before jumping over the cliff, he must have cut his own throat. He fell 300 ft. The wife is alive, and may possibly recover. There is no clue at present as to motive. Only evidence of identification was taken to-day, and the inquest was adjourned.

Boys are wanted to sell sports and concert tickets.

Hunt writes as rollows : Sir, I see by your paper of the 3rd inst,, an article re the ‘ Moderate Drinker and Lite Insurance.’ Now, I would like you to tell me why the Government Life Insurance Department had to close their total abstainers’ policies. If I remember rightly, the whole had to be transferred to the general fund, and there was no bonuses issued on those total abstainers until they were merged with general policy holders.”
