ELECTION DAY HOLIDAY.
Mr W. J. Cui.ver, Inspector of the Labour Department, supplies the following information for the benefit of factory owners and storekeepers as to the provisions of the law for employees on Election Day (Tuesday, xylh November). As regards shops; from midday cn Election Day is a public holiday, but it will be a sufficient compliance with the Act if storekeepers close from one o’clock on that day instead of the regular statutory closing day. If there is any award in force, however, affecting any particular shop, it will be necessary to see whether there is any provision in the award coming into conflict with this as regards factories. Factories need not close and all that is necessary is that the employers shall allow each employee a reasonable opportunity, up to one working hour’s leave, to record his vote, and no deduction shall be made from his wages. The penalty for failure to comply with the above is a penalty not exceeding £5 for each employee affectel.
